Oakham Villa have defeated Lyrean Lions for the first time in the club's history after producing two emphatic victories in an exhibition series, winning 18-1 before following it up with a 16-0 shutout.
While the matches were friendlies, they represented another milestone for a Villa side that continues to grow in confidence. Previous meetings with the Lions had ended in disappointment, making this the first time the Villains have come away with victories over one of Civ hockey's most established names.
The opening game was headlined by an extraordinary performance from snw, who found the net 10 times. That tally sees him move level for the third-highest individual goalscoring performance in a single Civ hockey game, matching a record that has stood for years. It was a clinical display from the Villa captain, who punished almost every opportunity that came his way.
Support came from across the lineup, with iPlexity adding a hat-trick and teato scoring four times as Oakham cruised to an 18-1 win. BlankestAtlas grabbed the Lions' only goal of the evening.
There was no let-up in the second match. Villa completed the sweep with a commanding 16-0 victory, this time sharing the goals around more evenly. snw scored seven, teato added another seven, and iPlexity finished with two as the defence secured a clean sheet.
Across the two games, Oakham Villa scored 34 goals, conceding just one, with the trio of snw, teato and iPlexity combining for every goal. The performances continue the side's impressive attacking form and provide another confidence boost ahead of the return to competitive Lyrean Cup action.
It may have been an exhibition series, but for Oakham Villa, this was more than just two wins. It was another step forward for a team that is beginning to make its mark on the Civ hockey scene.
